General Conference 2020 Resolutions

March 10, 2020

As part of its responsibility to identify and respond to critical social issues at community, regional, national, and international levels (do we need citation or footnote BOD ¶1004) , Church and Society reviewed expiring resolutions and drafted new petitions to provide the basis for forthright witness and action by United Methodists. This year, Church and Society submitted twenty-seven petitions, all speaking to critical social issues facing United Methodists in communities around the world. Each of these petitions is the product of careful board consideration to create statements that are theologically grounded, succinct, and contextually relevant. Importantly, these resolutions were created in light of existing resolutions adopted by the 2016 General Conference that continue to affirm The United Methodist Church’s position on key social issues including climate justice, health and wholeness, economic justice, global migration, and peace. Resolutions are teaching documents as well as calls to action – inspiring and empowering the justice ministries of United Methodists across our connection. As United Methodists use these resolutions, the words of The United Methodist Church are echoed in the halls of power and in the witness of people in the streets all aimed at confronting injustice and transforming our world into one that reflects God’s vision of justice and peace. Below are the petitions submitted to General Conference 2020. For a full list of petitions, please visit umcjustice.org/resolutions2020.

Saving mothers' lives: A call to action

Staggering numbers of women die each day as a result of childbirth and pregnancy. In response, Church and Society launched a campaign leading up to Mother's Day focused on the many ways we can save mothers' lives. We can do this work every day. Indeed, stopping maternal deaths is central to Jesus' command that we love our neighbors.
