Peace With Justice Sunday, June 11

While many individuals and churches across the connection work for peace and justice every day, once a year United Methodists get to celebrate and commit to the work of peace with justice.

Men gather in Nigeria to discuss peace

Peace With Justice Sunday is one of six Special Sundays within the Church and it is coming up on June 11, 2017.

Peace can seem very elusive, especially in our world today. With famine gripping entire countries, terror and war enveloping regions, foreign assistance budgets being slashed, diplomacy being disregarded, and weapons proliferating before our eyes, it can be easy to discount the importance of our role in pursuing peace.

But what I love about Peace With Justice Sunday, is that it enables us as United Methodists to work for peace around the world.

When you give to your church on June 11, Church and Society receives a portion of those funds. We are able to disperse funds in the form of grants to ministries that are doing this important work in many places around the world. In addition, we are able to continue to advocate at the international level for peace and justice.

Some recipients of this year’s Peace With Justice grants are below:

Justice For Our Neighbors chapters in Northern Illinois, Southeastern Michigan, Arizona, and Austin, Texas. These organizations will continue to support immigrants with legal services, Know Your Rights trainings, and advocacy efforts for immigrant rights.

The Election Management Project in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. This project will train clergy to become monitors to observe elections and ensure that they are peaceful and fair.

Shutting Down the School to Prison Pipeline in Florida Annual Conference. Allendale UMC will support ongoing efforts to disrupt the school to prison pipeline through community events and trainings.

Please join Church and Society on June 11 as we celebrate Peace With Justice Sunday, and continue our collective work for peace and justice in many ways and in many places.
