Educational Opportunities

Church and Society offers numerous opportunities for learning and engagement for youth, emerging leaders, universities and seminaries, clergy, and congregational groups.

Social Principles Workshops and Trainings

The Education and Leadership Formation staff are available to lead seminars, experiential workshops and trainings in your conferences, districts and local churches. We can also offer advice on how your local church can design programs that focus on social justice education, Examples of topics include:

Moving from mercy to justice — biblical, theological foundations for United Methodists and illustrations of how people of faith move from acts of compassion to accompaniment and advocacy.

Having attended I feel prepared to take the next steps towards genuine peace and justice where I serve.

Rev. Joe Varner, VA Conference

The Social Principles — what are they and what difference do they make in our spiritual journey and public witness in favor of justice and peace? Workshops can focus on the most relevant issues in church and society.

Conflict Transformation, resiliency and just responses to violence — several Social Principles directly address the causes and effects of violence to our planet, the world’s peoples and communities. How do people of faith contribute to peace-building at the local and national and internal levels?

Young Adult Clergy Forum

Each year Church and Society invites Young Clergy in the United Methodist Church below the age of 35 to Washington, D.C. to:

  • Connect young clergy with the critical ministry of Church and Society
  • Provide a forum to share knowledge and experience with one another
  • Create bridges for future ministry collaboration
  • Build relationships with other young clergy from across the United Methodist connection

Seminars

Seminars are open to United Methodists and non-United Methodists alike. They are available year-round. The topic, schedule and duration of the seminar is up to the preference of the group. Most seminars are two days, but we can also provide one day seminars or longer seminars.

For more information on the Seminar Program, please visit our seminar page.

Internships

The various internship programs that Church and Society offers provide hands-on work experience, as well as professional and spiritual formation as interns discern vocations in public life. Our full and part-time programs follow the schedule of an academic year.
