Who is My Neighbor? Health Care in America

April 9, 2017

The first rule of thumb in ministerial etiquette is "do not mix religion and politics". Of course, people do like it if your politics match their politics, but, of course, people disagree about politics. I am going to mix religion and politics, but I hope to avoid partisan politics. At the same time, I think the subject----health care in America-is too important for us as Christians to sit on the sidelines.

A Bridge Back to God: A Palm Sunday Reflection

April 5, 2017

It’s called the Bridge of Strings and when it opened in Jerusalem in 2008, like many things in that city, it was controversial, criticized as too extravagant by some, and as out of its element by others.

Simon of Cyrene and Mary McLeod Bethune: A Lenten Reflection

March 21, 2017

In the stories I heard growing up, Simon of Cyrene was a black man. While the association may stem from Cyrene’s location in North Africa (modern-day Libya), its power lies in racial experience.

The Band of Brothers and Sisters

March 8, 2017

This mural is located right before we enter into the worship hall of the First United Methodist Church in Flushing, NY. The images within the cross represent a campaign we began last year called the ‘Band of Brothers & Sisters.’ The ‘bands’ inspiration and heart came from the Gospel story of the four friends bringing a paralyzed person to Jesus Christ. Seeing the faith of the four friends, Jesus forgives the friend’s sins (Mark 2:5).

My name is Ndume Olatushani and I was wrongly convicted and sentenced to death. I spent 28 years in prison and twenty of those years were spent on death row in the state of Tennessee. Ultimately, I was released from prison on June 1, 2012.

Reflections on Transfiguration

February 26, 2017

As the Christian cycle moves from the winter light of Epiphany toward the spring light of Lent days grow longer and nights shorter. In this gradual movement the signs of light are varied in their beauty and clarity. Some light glimmers like the new fake candles that are a little off color. Some twilight is shrouded in wind and rain on a wet hike in early spring. Or some signs are the fleeting warmth in the heart.
