With global tensions high, Church and Society welcomes the introduction of bicameral resolutions, H.Res.100/S.Res.61, supporting the value of nuclear arms control treaties and imploring the United States and Russia to replace the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START).

With less than a year until the expiration of New START, the only remaining nuclear arms control treaty between the U.S. and Russia, it is more important than ever for global leaders to commit to nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation.

The resolutions call on Russia to resume compliance with New START and on the U.S. to engage in dialogue with Russia and China to prevent nuclear escalation and support arms control and risk reduction measures. These resolutions also condemn the use of nuclear escalatory rhetoric.

The United Methodist Church has long supported the abolition of nuclear weapons: “We reject the possession of nuclear weapons as a permanent basis for securing and maintaining peace…We call all nations that possess nuclear weapons to renounce these vile instruments of mass destruction and to move expeditiously to dismantle all nuclear warheads and delivery vehicles” (Book of Resolutions: The United Methodist Church and Peace).

Take action below to support nuclear arms control by emailing your Representatives and Senators to ask them to co-sponsor H.Res.100/S.Res.61.
