National Cooperative Ministry Leadership

2016 Book of Resolutions, #3101


Whereas, the effectiveness of cooperative projects, ministries, and parishes for the purposes of congregational nurturing, out-reach to communities of the poor and marginalized, and witnessing to Christian commitments in rural, urban, and suburban communities has long been recognized; and

Whereas, in fulfillment of the mandate from the 2008 General Conference “to plan and carry forward a national cooperative parish consultation in order to facilitate broader use of existing cooperative forms and the incorporation of new patterns and processes that continue to emerge throughout the church,” an event known as “Soaring High: Cooperative Ministries Changing Lives, Congregations and Communities” was held in Huntsville, AL in 2009. Under the coordination of the Rural Chaplains Association, this gathering reaffirmed the need and potential for bringing people together for training, networking and celebration;

Therefore, be it resolved, that the General Board of Global Ministries, the General Board of Discipleship, the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry, and the Office of Christian Unity and Inter-religious Relationships be called upon to provide encouragement, financial support and work with constituencies that are at the forefront of cooperative ministries. This will include training events that expand the effective use of cooperative patterns and processes within the Church and ecumenically;

Be it further resolved, that the annual conferences, districts, and local churches of The United Methodist Church be called on to implement processes that will result in understandings of how to initiate needed cooperative projects, ministries, and parishes and to facilitate their movement toward local and global mission and ministry.
