Here's how you can help refugees

Your help is urgently needed. Email your members of Congress now and ask them to protect refugees.

The Trump administration has spent the last three years in office dismantling the refugee resettlement program.

Last week, the administration announced two decisions that put refugees’ lives at risk.

First, in a presidential determination letter, the president set the fiscal year 2020 limit on the number of refugees the United States would admit at 18,000. That’s the lowest number in the history of the U.S. refugee resettlement program. For context, the number in 2016 was 116,000, and the average over the last four decades has been 95,000.

Email Congress now and tell them to reject this dangerously low cap.

We live in a world that is full of pain. People are fleeing violence and religious persecution. People desperately need a place of refuge.

The Bible is full of stories of refugees finding welcome in new lands. Our lord and savior, Jesus Christ, fled persecution and was a refugee in Egypt. (Matthew 2:13-18)

The U.S. has a long history of being a new land for people in need.

At a time when the need is the greatest, this administration seems intent on smearing our legacy of hospitality.

Send a message now: Welcoming refugees is welcoming Christ.

In addition to the presidential determination letter, the president also signed an executive order last week that outlined a dangerous new policy. The executive order clears the way for state and local officials to block refugees from their communities.

Due to low resettlement numbers in recent years, we’ve also heard from our partners, like Church World Service, that they’re having to close resettlement offices around the country.

This is unprecedented.

By reducing the number of refugees admitted, by granting state and local officials a license to discriminate, and by tearing apart the refugee resettlement infrastructure, the U.S. refugee resettlement program is at risk of being dismantled for years to come.

Congress needs to hear from you as a Christian and a United Methodist. Let them know that this is immoral and unacceptable.

Please let your voice be heard.
