Church and Society Welcomes New General Secretary
Bishop Julius C. Trimble offers his thoughts on becoming the new General Secretary of the General Board of Church and Society.
Friends,
My time as an active residential Bishop has ended. However, on September 1, 2024, my tenure began as the new General Secretary of the General Board of Church and Society.
Over the summer, I have eagerly looked forward to my time in Washington, D.C. and New York City, working in collaboration with such a gifted team, as well as the many opportunities to work with ecumenical and interfaith partners for U.S. legislative advocacy and international social justice priorities.
Serving in this new role and simultaneously celebrating the 100-year anniversary of social witness at the United Methodist Building, I am honored and humbled to follow in the footsteps of past Church and Society General Secretaries, who led social justice efforts and built coalitions that helped to change our country and the world. Today, our social witness and actions are critical as ever.
Continuing to build upon our significant legacy, this new season of United Methodism will call for faithful stewardship, as well as investments in innovation and risk taking, for the advancement of our mission to uphold our Social Principles for human well-being, justice, peace and the integrity of creation, which were adopted at General Conference in Charlotte this past May, 2024.
Looking toward the future, I am excited about the impact of our work with all those who would pursue beloved community and refuse to push the mute button on our prophetic witness for faith, peace and justice.
