Action Alert: Tell Congress to Pass the Equality Act
Call on Congress to pass the Equality Act to ensure federal protections for the LGBTQIA+ community.
Over the past year, we have witnessed a dramatic rise in violence and hate towards LGBTQIA+ people. Needless to say this is a disturbing trend of extremism against communities who are simply seeking to live and prosper in a country that is expected to uphold human rights for all. Furthermore, it’s even more alarming that U.S. legislative policy leaders have pushed LGBTQIA+ misinformation and disinformation increasing the threat of hostility, violence and extremism.
Tragically, many communities have failed to guarantee these basic human rights and instead – all too often under the pretense of religious belief or political interest – institutionalize and codify discrimination against LGBTQ+ people. As United Methodists we deplore acts of hate and violence against groups or persons based on sexual identity.
The United Methodist Church remains steadfast in support for laws in civil society that uphold the rights of LGBTQ+ people.
“We affirm all persons as equally valuable in the sight of God. We therefore work toward societies in which each person’s value is recognized, maintained, and strengthened. Certain basic human rights and civil liberties are due all persons. We are committed to supporting those rights and liberties for all persons, regardless of sexual orientation.” 2016 United Methodist Social Principles, ¶162
As such, we call on Congress to pass the Equality Act to ensure federal protections for the LGBTQIA+ community. At a time when state legislatures are passing regressive laws, Congress must take a step toward protecting all individuals from legal bias, prejudice and hate.
Contact your Senators and Representatives and let them know now is the time to move forward with the Equality Act.
