New York Representative Nydia Velázquez (D-NY-7) has re-introduced a resolution calling for the annulment of the Monroe Doctrine and the development of a ‘‘New Good Neighbor’’ policy to improve relations and cooperation between the U.S. and its Latin American and Caribbean neighbors.

The Monroe Doctrine has been central to U.S. foreign policy since the 19th century, translating to U.S. imperialism and militarism in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Trump Administration has repeatedly cited the Monroe Doctrine for illegal and harmful interventions in the region. Catastrophic behavior by the U.S. Government includes the extrajudicial killings of alleged narcotraffickers in the Caribbean and Pacific, unauthorized military intervention in Venezuela, and threats of strikes on Mexico, Colombia, Cuba, and Panama.

According to Rep. Velázquez, these recent actions are simply part and parcel of a long history of unjust and reckless U.S. policies toward the region. Rep. Velázquez’s resolution helps to shed light on this history and charts an alternative, positive path forward for U.S.-Latin American relations based on peace and mutual respect.

Church and Society echoes the call from the Council of Bishops in solidarity with The Evangelical Methodist Churches of Latin America and the Caribbean (CIEMAL): “We urge United Methodists around the world to unite in prayer for the Venezuelan people and for all communities affected by violence and instability.” As our Social Principles guide us: “The church deplores war and all other forms of violent conflict and urges the peaceful settlement of all disputes. We yearn for the day when there will be no more war and people will live together in peace and justice.”
