Launching a year of celebration, an afternoon event celebrating 100 years of social witness earlier this week, highlighted the United Methodist shared commitment on Capitol Hill and beyond.

Dr. Ashley Boggan, General Secretary of Archives and History, provided a dynamic, historical perspective on Wesleyan/UMC social witness, then and now, followed by a robust roundtable response and discussion with GBCS Board members The Rev. Dr. Sharon Austin and Mr. Sam England, moderated by Ms. Aimee Hong, GBCS Sr. Executive Director of Education and Engagement.

The Honorable Emanuel Cleaver, II, United States House of Representatives, a devout United Methodist, walked over from Congress (across the street) and offered his thoughts on the vital work of the Church to pursue peace and seek justice.

Dr. Jessica Smith, GBCS Sr. Executive Director of Research and Planning, presented her new book, For Justice and Enduring Peace, which highlights the work of Methodists and ecumenical partners on Capitol Hill.

Mr. John Hill, Church and Society Interim General Secretary and The Rev. Dr. Susan Henry-Crowe, former Church and Society General Secretary, shared a motivational charge of action and described how we continue to advance the work of social peace and justice.

Erected in 1923 and officially opening on January 10, 1924, The United Methodist Building has been a center for Methodist social witness on Capitol Hill and beyond for over 100 years.
