Washington, D.C. - The General Board of Church and Society (GBCS) of the United Methodist Church (UMC) today announced it has officially opened the search process for candidates interested in applying for the General Secretary position located at the United Methodist Building on Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.

Following the GBCS bylaws and the UMC Book of Discipline, the Search Committee of the GBCS Board of Directors has retained RAFTELIS, an executive search firm, to conduct the formal search, which will remain open until the General Secretary position is filled. The deadline for online applications is November 10, 2023. See recruitment profile here.

“We are looking forward to working with RAFTELIS executive search firm,” said Dr. Randall Miller, Vice-President, GBCS Board of Directors and Search Committee Chair. “We plan to select someone with deep faith, exceptional executive talent, experience and integrity, uniquely prepared to lead with vision, courage and imagination.”

The GBCS General Secretary is elected by and accountable to the Board of Directors and collaborates closely with the Board President to achieve strategic priorities and objectives for the agency. The General Secretary position oversees the agency’s vision, mission and mandate for witness and action on issues of human well-being, justice and peace, leading the agency in responding to critical social issues, facilitating the church’s legislative advocacy, and coordinating its priorities for the U.S. Congress. The role also oversees international priorities with various interfaith partners, government and non-governmental organizations at the United Nations in New York City.

“GBCS has a powerful history of living faith, seeking justice and pursuing peace,” said Bishop Sally Dyck, GBCS Board President and UMC Ecumenical Officer of the Council of Bishops. “As we commemorate 100 years of faithful witness on Capitol Hill, we are excited to identify our next General Secretary who will continue that legacy and provide leadership amid the challenges facing both our church and our society.”
