Protect the Vote: Become an Election Observer

As the United States prepares for the 2026 midterm elections, people of faith have an important role to play in upholding the integrity of the democratic process. As the nation marks 250 years of democracy, these elections reveal the moral, political and social priorities of the nation. Amid concerns about election interference and declining public trust in elections, people of faith are called to stand as protectors and observers of the vote.
To support this work, Church and Society has created the UMC Election Observers Program to equip United Methodists to serve as election observers.
Election observers are trained individuals who observe polling places and election processes to help promote transparency, fairness and public confidence in elections. Unlike poll workers, they serve as nonpartisan witnesses to the electoral process rather than administering elections.
What to Expect
Over six weeks, participants will explore the history of voting in the United States, the sacred nature of the vote, the role and responsibilities of election observers, and how to become an observer in their state and local community.
In collaboration with Directors of Connectional Ministries, conference justice ministries leaders and other identified conference leaders, Church and Society staff will help participants identify local requirements and opportunities to serve as election observers in their counties. While all approval and official training will take place under the guidance of local boards of elections, this program will provide theological, historical and practical grounding for United Methodists seeking to serve in this role.
