Asya Coles, Theology Intern

Background, Goals and Interests

I am a Greenville, NC native- I am a raised Missionary Baptist.

I am currently attending Duke University’s Divinity School pursuing a dual degree (Masters of Divinity and Masters of Social Work). I am working towards receiving my certificates in Black Church Studies and my certification in Faith-based organizing, community development, and advocacy.

As the EYA Chaplain, I believe that God has called me here to begin applying my faith to the essence of being rooted in justice, to become more comfortable with discerning devotions with others, and to create a lasting relationship with the staff of The General Board of Church & Society (inclusive of the interns).

Also, I will be working closely with the director of Civil and Human Rights. I will not only be here to soak up the formal knowledge given to me, but I am here to act on injustice.

I believe this experience will increase my understanding of the language of justice and its functional components to the church’s work. I will use my biblical and lived knowledge of God to be a vessel of support when faced with the many injustices we are plagued with today. The injustice of too lax gun laws, the injustice surrounding immigration, the injustices surrounding people’s divine love, and the injustice of the lack of accessibility to higher education in the black and brown communities.

To be involved with Church and Society connects to the ministries I have been a part of and the kinds of ministry that I wish to be a part of Ministries that seek to connect individuals, as they stand, with God.

With these things always in my mind, I will ensure that I am open and honest and keep the point of reference as God. It is a blessing to have this opportunity as a part of my journey.
