Action Alert: Tell the Senate to Block Weapons Sales Fueling Conflict in the Middle East

Call attention to Israel’s egregious violations of international law and break the cycle of violence.

In the year since the October 7th Hamas attacks on Israel and the ensuing Israeli bombardment of Gaza, as well as further escalatory attacks on Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen, innocent civilians continue to be targeted, pushing the region further away from a just peace.

As of October 2024, Israel’s bombardment of Gaza has killed over 42,000 Palestinians and injured around 100,000, with at least 1,000 Lebanese killed since the beginning of the Israeli bombardment and invasion of Lebanon.

Despite this devastation, the United States continues to send more military aid to Israel.

Legislative Action

In response, Senators Sanders (VT), Schatz (HI), Merkley (OR), and Welch (VT) have introduced Joint Resolutions of Disapproval to block over $20 billion in arms sales to Israel, set for a vote after the election.

The United Methodist Church’s Stance

For decades, the United Methodist Church has condemned territorial expansion and aggression, advocated for justice for refugees, and called for an end to arms sales in the Middle East. The resolution Opposition to Israeli Settlements in Palestinian Land states:

“We seek for all people in the Middle East region an end to military occupation, freedom from violence, and full respect for the human rights of all under international law.” The resolution also urges the U.S. government to “end all military aid to the region.”

To live our mission of transforming the world, we must prioritize durable solutions to the root causes of conflict over militarized responses that further perpetuate violence.
