Health care and the power of countless United Methodists

Upon the Senate's rejection of legislation rolling back health care access in the United States, the general secretary issues a statement.

Early this morning, the U.S. Senate rejected an unwise and unjust bill that would have reduced coverage, decreased access and increased costs for millions of people across the country. This legislation stood in stark contrast to the life and teachings of Jesus Christ and positions of The United Methodist Church.

Countless United Methodists met with their members of Congress, called offices, wrote comments, tweeted, preached sermons, kept vigil, rallied, prayed, and demanded that quality health care be affordable and accessible to all people. Such an embodiment of our United Methodist faith has been felt here in Washington, D.C. at Church and Society and within the halls of Congress.

While we may be feeling relief or celebration, we must remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring affordable, quality health care for all people (Social Principles ¶162.V). We implore our elected officials to work in a bipartisan manner to improve current health care laws and prioritize the needs of vulnerable communities. And we urge United Methodists to stay engaged, keep calling and praying, and never stop fighting for the common good. Our faith demands it.
