The Hate U Give

When your favorite book becomes a brilliant movie!

My daughters and I have been patiently waiting for The Hate U Give to open in theaters. Getting my daughters (Seventh and 10th grade) to settle down for bed over the summer was easy because we couldn’t wait to read what was going to happen next in this timely and inspiring novel.

That novel is now a movie, released Friday.

Starr Carter — a smart, beautiful and hip African-American high school student — lives in two worlds, the African-American neighborhood where her parents grew up and are raising her, and a predominantly white private school where her parents have enrolled her and her two brothers. On her way home from a party with one of her best friends, they are pulled over by a police officer. Carter witnesses the murder of her best friend by the office and the story ensues.

This story is poignant for people of faith.

The issues that unfold mirror those in our society. Like many of the young people in our churches, Carter is a vibrant and conscientious person who is met with challenges among friends and within her communities.

The honesty with which her friends, family and community members talk with her is refreshing and inspiring. Giving her guidance, grace and space, Carter meets the world in a new way and embraces the challenges before her.

My daughters and I give it 5 stars!
