Praying for peace and comfort

The general secretary responds to the bombing at a crowded mosque in Egypt, the deadliest attack in Egypt's modern history.

There are no reasons to justify the mass murder of more than 300 people at prayer in Egypt. We are deeply saddened by the loss of precious life. We are overwhelmed by those who committed this barbaric act. We cry out to God, why?

As United Methodists, we are unalterably opposed to those who instill hate in one group for another. Political factions must not use religion, class, race or other differences as the means to achieve heinous political purposes. (Book of Resolutions, 6129)

We stand with the people of Egypt and those around the world who are victims of hatred and acts of terror. We pray for comfort for the families who lost loved ones and for peace throughout the world.
