A prayer for World Communion Sunday

World Communion Sunday is October 1 this year. Here’s a prayer you can use in your worship service.

World Communion Sunday is a celebration of our unity in Christ as experienced in Holy Communion. As we lift bread and cup, Christians around the world do the same. We pray together, asking God to make us one with Christ and with each other. While this is true for all celebrations of the Eucharist, the first Sunday in October is set aside to be intentional about our desire for better relationships with Christians across all the various lines that divide us.

World Communion Sunday is also one of the several church-wide special Sundays of The United Methodist Church. Many churches will take a special offering to provide scholarships for racial and ethnic minorities.

A prayer for World Communion Sunday

O God,
Bread of life, Cup of blessing
We gather at Your table
Tired and broken
By systems of oppression and discrimination
Bread of Life, Cup of Blessing
We Gather at Your table
Hungry and Scared
In a world consumed by hate, greed, and envy.
Bread of Life, Cup of Blessing
We gather at Your Table
You reply, “Come to me all ye who are weary
And heavy laden and I will give you rest.”
Bread of Life, Cup of Blessing
We gather at Your Table.
You say, “This is my body
Broken for you,
Do this in remembrance of me.”
Bread of Life, Cup of Blessing
We Gather at Your Table.
Grateful and Free
We feast on your love
Bread of Life, Cup of Blessing
We gather at Your Table.
Blessed and Filled
We marvel at Your beauty
Bread of Life, Cup of Blessing
We gather at Your Table.
Beloved and Amazed
We see one another in love.
Bread of Life, Cup of Blessing
We gather at Your table.
Alive and Hopeful
We walk with the downtrodden, the poor, and the hungry.
Bread of Life, Cup of Blessing
Amen.
