“On Our Journey to Justice” No Turning Back on Voting Rights

Too many Americans, particularly in communities of color, have been unjustly prevented from exercising their sacred right to vote.

The Right to Vote is Sacred
Tell Congress: Uphold the Right to Vote

“We ain’t going back! We’ve come too far, marched too long, prayed too hard, wept too bitterly, bled too profusely and died too young, to let anybody turn back the clock on our journey to justice.” – Rev. Joseph Lowery

The United Methodist Church calls for a vision of beloved community founded on economic and racial justice, including strengthening voting rights protections.

As a United Methodist, I write to urge you to help strengthen our democracy at this critical time. Too many Americans, particularly in communities of color, have been unjustly prevented from exercising their sacred right to vote through extraordinary and deeply discriminatory voter suppression laws.

“We hold governments responsible for the protection of the rights of the people to free and fair elections…The form and the leaders of all governments should be determined by exercise of the right to vote guaranteed to all adult citizens.” (2016 Book of Discipline, ¶164a “Basic Freedoms and Human Rights.”)

Contact your U.S. Senators today and urge them to support the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (S.4) and the Freedom to Vote Act (S.2747).

As we celebrate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. in these coming days, we have the opportunity and responsibility to continue this journey to justice for which so many have worked.
